What a delightful alternative to driving through the Chicago traffic!  I caught the Lake Express Ferry in Muskegon, Michigan this morning, and was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by lunch time!  It is 75 miles across this great lake.  It was a beautiful day, and a very relaxing ride.

There are 5 great lakes stretched across the northern border of the United States:  Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, and Lake Superior.  In my younger life I lived near Lake Michigan and a trip to the beaches  each summer was a highlight.  When I lived in Rochester, New York, I was only a few miles from Lake Ontario, and later this week when I reach Mackinac Island I will be between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.  These great bodies of water are called lakes instead of seas because they are fresh water.  They were formed when glaciers moved across this part of North America millennia ago.  They comprise 21% of the fresh water on the earth.
