One of the museums in Biloxi is the home of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, 1860 – 1865. This was an unusual place for a confirmed northerner to find herself, but I knew little about Davis and am always open to learning about the history of a place. He had been a Senator from Mississippi before the conflict began, and resigned as the southern states began succeeding. He was also Secretary of War for the United States under Franklin Pierce from 1853 – 57. He was captured after the surrender of the Confederate Army and held for 2 years, but in the end was not tried for treason and was released. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1875 but was not allowed to serve, as was true for many of the Conferate leaders. He lived quietly, doing some writing and lecturing, until his death in 1889.
